itunes, filesharing, bittorrent – but what is legal?

itunes, filesharing, bittorrent - but what is legal?

There is a dizzying array of options for downloading media from the internet. Some legal some not. Here is a brief definition of some of them -

Google Images- easily accessible but these images belong to other peoples websites and are covered by copyright!

istockphotos.com www.photos.com www.gettyimages.co.nz
- all legal stock photos download with small fees per image.

Bit Torrent program - software programs that download books, movies and images of files shared by other members. The technology downloads small bits of the file from multiple other users. Before using a bit torrent program you search and download the torrent (effectively like an address) and open it in the bit torrent program. Files are likely to be illegally shared, and can potentially contain harmful malware! But there are also legal torrents available.

Apple iTunes Store- purchase and download music, music videos, television shows, applications, iPod games, audiobooks, podcasts, feature length films, and ringtones. The iTunes Store is owned and controlled by Apple, largely for use with their products and software. Ie iphones, ipads, ipods, apple computers etc.

Google Apps Store and Blackberry Apps Store - download free or purchase applications for Google’s Android operating system used on many smart phones, similarly for Blackberry phones. Essentially the same as Apples iTunes Store.

books.google.com- Google Books allows for free download of public domain books in several formats (PDF and epub), or to view a snippet of copyright books.

The advent of the desktop PC was supposed to herald in a new era of working less and having more free time. I’m not so sure!
